The Driftwink app does not collect personal data from you or your child. Your child's stories and names are stored on your device and are never sent to us. Narration is generated on your device, and the app does not use the microphone. The only permission Driftwink can ask for is notifications, and only if a grown-up turns on the optional bedtime reminder. Purchases go through Apple. There are no user accounts, no analytics SDKs, and no advertising. On this website, Cloudflare delivers the pages, and Resend holds your email address only if you join the waitlist.
Who we are
Driftwink is a bedtime story app for children aged 2 to 9, developed and operated by Forgehaven Labs LLC ("we," "us," or "our"). Driftwink is being prepared for submission to the Apple App Store. If you have questions about this policy, contact us at [email protected].
This policy covers the Driftwink app for iPhone and iPad and the Driftwink website at driftwink.com.
The short version: what we collect
The Driftwink app has no servers and sends us no personal data about you or your child. Everything the app creates stays on your device. The only personal data we hold is the email address (with a sign-up label and time) of grown-ups who join the website waitlist, described below.
Specifically:
- No name, email, phone number, or contact information is collected.
- No device identifier, advertising identifier, or IP address is collected by the app.
- No analytics SDK, crash-reporting SDK, or advertising SDK is included in the app.
- No data is sold, shared, or monetized in any way.
- Subscription payments are processed entirely by Apple via StoreKit 2, so we never receive your payment card information.
What stays on your device
The following data is created and stored locally on your device only:
- Your child's name and age, entered during onboarding and stored in the app's private SwiftData database on-device. This data is never sent to us.
- Story content. Stories are composed on your device from pre-authored building blocks and saved locally. Story text and audio are not uploaded anywhere.
- Narrator voice choice. Which built-in narrator voice you select is a local preference. See the Narration and the microphone section below for full details.
- Bedtime reminder settings. Whether the optional reminder is on and the time you picked. See the Notifications section below.
- App preferences. Your chosen themes, ambient sounds, playback speed, and other settings are stored in iOS UserDefaults and are never sent to us.
- Subscription status, managed entirely by Apple via StoreKit 2. Driftwink reads your subscription entitlement locally; we do not maintain a subscription database on any server.
If you use iCloud Backup or back up to a computer, your device's backup may include this data. That backup is controlled by you and Apple, and we cannot access it.
Narration and the microphone
Driftwink does not use the microphone. The app has no audio-recording feature, never asks for microphone access, and does not record, create, or keep a copy of anyone's voice.
How narration works
Stories are read aloud by one of three narrator voices, Luna, Wren, and Sol. The speech is generated on your device by a neural voice model that ships inside the app. The story text, including your child's name, is turned into speech on the device and is never sent to a server for processing. The narrator voices are not recordings of a real person. Your voice selection is stored locally as a preference and never sent to us.
While a story plays, the lock-screen and Control Center audio player, and connected devices such as an Apple Watch or a car display, show only a general title made from the story's world, such as "Moon Garden bedtime story". It never includes the hero's name or any other name you entered; the full story title appears only inside the app. That display is handled by iOS and is not sent to us.
Notifications (optional bedtime reminder)
Driftwink includes an optional bedtime reminder. It is off by default. A grown-up turns it on in Settings → Bedtime Reminder inside the app, after a parental check, and only then does iOS ask for notification permission (alerts and sounds). Driftwink does not ask for notification permission at any other time, and if permission is declined the reminder simply stays off.
The reminder is a local notification scheduled on your device by iOS, once a day at the time you choose. There is no push server: nothing is sent to us or to any third party to create or deliver it, and no data leaves your device for it. The message is always the same: the title "Bedtime story time" and the line "Wind down with tonight's bedtime story." It never includes your child's name or anything else you entered, so nothing personal appears on your lock screen or in Notification Center.
You can turn the reminder off at any time in the app, or turn off Driftwink notifications in Settings → Notifications → Driftwink on your iPhone or iPad.
Children's privacy (COPPA)
Driftwink is designed for parents and caregivers to use on behalf of children aged 2 to 9. The app will be offered in the App Store's Education category, not in Apple's Kids Category. Regardless of category, we take children's privacy seriously and have architected the app so that it collects no personal information from anyone, whether child or adult, as that term is defined by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and equivalent regulations. (The website waitlist collects only a grown-up's email address, described below.)
- The child's name and age entered during onboarding are stored only in the device-local database and are never sent to us or any third party.
- We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
- The primary user is always the parent or guardian who downloads the app, and any purchase is made through that grown-up's Apple Account.
- No third-party advertisers, analytics providers, or data brokers are integrated into the app.
If you are a parent who believes a child has provided data beyond what is described above, please contact us at [email protected].
Settings → Privacy → Delete All Data in the app permanently removes your stories and story characters, including the hero's name and age, from this device. It also turns off the bedtime reminder, cancels any scheduled reminder, removes any reminder still showing in Notification Center, and clears the reminder's on/off setting and time. Your other app preferences (such as narrator voice, playback speed, sleep timer and ambient sound) and the app's count of free stories used stay on your device. To remove everything Driftwink stores on your device, delete the app.
Third-party services
Driftwink integrates no third-party SDKs for analytics, advertising, crash reporting, or data collection. Besides Apple's own system frameworks (such as AVFoundation, SwiftData, StoreKit 2, and UserNotifications for the optional reminder), the app bundles open-source components for on-device narration: the Kokoro text-to-speech voice model, Microsoft's ONNX Runtime, which runs that model, and open pronunciation data. All of them run entirely on your device and send nothing anywhere.
Purchases. Family subscriptions and the Lifetime Unlock are bought through Apple's App Store using StoreKit. Apple processes the payment; Driftwink never receives your payment details, and it checks your purchase on the device with StoreKit 2, without a server of our own. Apart from web links you choose to open (such as this policy), talking to Apple's App Store to show prices and check or restore your purchases is the only reason the app uses the network. Apple's own data practices govern the purchase transaction. Please review Apple's Privacy Policy for details on how Apple handles payment and App Store data.
Crash reports from Apple. If you have turned on Share With App Developers in iOS, Apple may share crash and usage data with us through App Store Connect. Apple collects it in a form that does not personally identify you, and we use it only to fix problems in the app.
Visiting this website
The website is hosted by Cloudflare (Cloudflare Pages), our hosting provider and content delivery network. Every page, font, image, script, and audio sample on driftwink.com is served through Cloudflare, so on every visit Cloudflare receives your IP address and the technical details your browser sends with each request (such as the browser type and the page requested). Cloudflare uses them to deliver the site and to protect it from abuse. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.
Your browser does not contact any other company while you browse the site: our fonts are hosted on driftwink.com, not loaded from a font service. Resend receives your data only if you join the waitlist, as described below. No other third party receives data from your visit.
We do not run analytics or advertising on the website, and our pages set no cookies. If we turn on Cloudflare Web Analytics later, we will update this section before enabling it.
Waitlist email (website only)
If you sign up for the pre-launch waitlist on our website, we collect your email address for the sole purpose of notifying you when Driftwink launches on the App Store. We will send you one email on launch day. We will not send newsletters, marketing campaigns, or any other communications without your additional consent.
The sign-up form sends your email address to our sign-up handler, which runs on Cloudflare, and the handler passes it to Resend (resend.com), a transactional email service (see Resend's Privacy Policy). Your email address is stored in Resend until you request deletion or the app launches and the list is closed. With your email address we also store a short sign-up source label (such as "homepage", or a campaign tag from the link you followed) and the date and time you signed up, in Resend and in any sign-up notice we email to ourselves; your IP address is used only briefly, in memory, to limit repeated sign-ups and is not stored with your email. To request removal from the waitlist before launch, email [email protected] with "Remove from waitlist" in the subject line.
Your rights
The app sends us no personal data, so most data-subject rights (access, portability, correction) are satisfied by the data being entirely in your possession on your device. For waitlist emails:
- Access / portability: Email us at [email protected] and we will confirm whether your email is on the waitlist.
- Deletion: Email us to be removed from the waitlist at any time.
- Complaints: If you are in the EU/EEA, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
In-app data never reaches us, so you delete it on your device: Settings → Privacy → Delete All Data removes your stories, story characters and the bedtime reminder, and deleting the app removes everything else (see Delete All Data above). We hold no copy of this data.
Data retention and deletion
- Stories, story characters and the bedtime reminder settings stay on your device until you use Delete All Data or delete the app. Other preferences stay until you change them or delete the app.
- Deleting the Driftwink app removes all of its locally stored data, including any scheduled bedtime reminder. Device backups you made earlier are managed by you and Apple.
- Waitlist emails are held until the launch broadcast is sent, after which the list will be archived and no further emails sent.
Security
Because the app sends no story or child data to any server of ours, there is no server-side attack surface for Driftwink's core functionality. Story and child-profile data reside in the app's private sandboxed container, protected by iOS's standard data-protection mechanisms. Driftwink records no audio, so there is no voice data anywhere to secure.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy if the app's data practices change, for example if a future version adds cloud features. Any material change (such as enabling cloud voice processing) will require updating this policy before the updated app is submitted to the App Store, and the App Store Connect privacy nutrition label will be updated to match. We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page when changes are made, and each version takes effect on that date.
We will never introduce data collection practices that conflict with the plain-language commitments in this policy without giving advance notice and seeking fresh consent where required by law.
