Driftwink does not collect personal data from you or your child. The microphone is used only while a family member records a Family Voice reading, and that audio stays on your device unless you choose to share it. Your child's stories and names are stored only on your device and are never transmitted to any server. There are no user accounts, no analytics SDKs, and no advertising.
Who we are
Driftwink is a bedtime story app for children aged 2 to 9, developed and operated by Forgehaven Labs LLC ("we," "us," or "our"). Driftwink is being prepared for submission to the Apple App Store. If you have questions about this policy, contact us at [email protected].
This policy covers the Driftwink app for iPhone and iPad and the Driftwink website at driftwink.com.
The short version: what we collect
We do not collect, transmit, or store any personal data from you or your child on our servers, because we have no servers. Everything that happens in Driftwink stays on your device.
Specifically:
- No name, email, phone number, or contact information is collected.
- No device identifier, advertising identifier, or IP address is collected by the app.
- No analytics SDK, crash-reporting SDK, or advertising SDK is included in the app.
- No data is sold, shared, or monetised in any way.
- Subscription payments are processed entirely by Apple via StoreKit 2, so we never receive your payment card information.
What stays on your device
The following data is created and stored locally on your device only:
- Your child's name and age, entered during onboarding and stored in the app's private SwiftData database on-device. This data is never transmitted.
- Story content. Stories are composed on your device from pre-authored building blocks and saved locally. Story text and audio are not uploaded anywhere.
- Narrator voice choice. Which built-in narrator voice you select is a local preference. See the Voices and the microphone section below for full details.
- Family Voice recordings. If a family member records a Family Voice reading, the audio is saved on your device only. It is never uploaded, and it leaves your device only if you deliberately choose to share it.
- App preferences. Your chosen themes, ambient sounds, playback speed, and other settings are stored in iOS UserDefaults and never leave the device.
- Subscription status, managed entirely by Apple via StoreKit 2. Driftwink reads your subscription entitlement locally; we do not maintain a subscription database on any server.
Voices and the microphone
Driftwink uses the microphone in one situation only: while a family member is actively recording a Family Voice reading. Outside of that recording screen, the app does not access the microphone. iOS asks for your permission the first time, and you can change it at any point in Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
How narration works
By default, stories are read aloud by one of three curated narrator voices that ship with the app, Luna, Wren, and Sol. These are built-in voices; you simply choose which one your child likes. Your selection is stored locally as a preference and never transmitted. Playing a story never uses the microphone.
Family Voices
Family Voices lets someone your child loves, a grandparent, a parent, or another family member, record themselves reading a bedtime story so your child can play it back later. Making that recording is the only time Driftwink uses the microphone.
Each recording is saved on your device. It is never uploaded to any server, because Driftwink has no server, no account, and no analytics. A recording leaves your device only if you deliberately choose to share it, for example through Messages, AirDrop, or your own iCloud backup. Driftwink itself never sends it anywhere.
Apple Personal Voice
If you have created an Apple Personal Voice in your device's Settings, you can choose it inside Driftwink. Personal Voice is an Apple feature: you set it up yourself in Settings → Accessibility → Personal Voice, and iOS keeps it on your device. Driftwink only plays it back through Apple's system APIs; it never creates, copies, or uploads your Personal Voice.
What it is not
Driftwink never clones, synthesizes, or copies anyone's voice. A Family Voice is simply a real recording of a real person reading aloud, nothing more. The built-in narrator voices are pre-made, and Apple Personal Voice, if you use it, is created and held by iOS, not by Driftwink. We believe in being honest about what the app does.
Children's privacy (COPPA)
Driftwink is designed for parents and caregivers to use on behalf of children aged 2 to 9. The app is offered in the App Store's Education category and is not enrolled in Apple's Kids Category. Regardless of category, we take children's privacy seriously and have architected the app to collect no personal information from anyone, whether child or adult, as that term is defined by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and equivalent regulations.
- The child's name and age entered during onboarding are stored only in the device-local database and are never transmitted to us or any third party.
- We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
- The primary user and account holder is always the parent or guardian who downloads the app and manages subscriptions.
- No third-party advertisers, analytics providers, or data brokers are integrated into the app.
- A Family Voice reading is recorded only when a family member deliberately chooses to, is stored only on the device, and is never transmitted to us or any third party.
If you are a parent who believes a child has provided data beyond what is described above, please contact us at [email protected]. You can also use the in-app Delete All Data feature to remove all locally stored data immediately.
Third-party services
Driftwink integrates no third-party SDKs for analytics, advertising, crash reporting, or data collection. The app contains zero third-party frameworks beyond Apple's own system frameworks (AVFoundation, SwiftData, StoreKit 2).
Subscription payments are processed by Apple. Apple's own data practices govern the purchase transaction. Please review Apple's Privacy Policy for details on how Apple handles payment and App Store data.
Website analytics
The Driftwink marketing website may use Cloudflare Web Analytics (planned, not yet enabled), a privacy-first, cookieless analytics service. If enabled, Cloudflare Web Analytics does not set cookies, does not fingerprint users, and does not track individuals across sites. No personal data would be shared with third parties as a result of visiting this website. No cookie consent banner would be required.
Waitlist email (website only)
If you sign up for the pre-launch waitlist on our website, we collect your email address for the sole purpose of notifying you when Driftwink launches on the App Store. We will send you one email on launch day. We will not send newsletters, marketing campaigns, or any other communications without your additional consent.
Waitlist emails are processed via Resend (resend.com), a transactional email service. Your email address is stored in Resend until you request deletion or the app launches and the list is closed. To request removal from the waitlist before launch, email [email protected] with "Remove from waitlist" in the subject line.
Your rights
Because we hold no personal data on our servers, most data-subject rights (access, portability, correction) are satisfied by the data being entirely in your possession on your device. For waitlist emails:
- Access / portability: Email us at [email protected] and we will confirm whether your email is on the waitlist.
- Deletion: Email us to be removed from the waitlist at any time.
- Complaints: If you are in the EU/EEA, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
For all in-app data (stories, child profiles, preferences), deletion is handled entirely on your device via Settings → Privacy → Delete All Data. We hold no copy of this data.
Data retention and deletion
- All in-app data persists on your device until you delete it via the in-app tool or uninstall the app.
- Uninstalling Driftwink removes all locally stored data.
- Waitlist emails are held until the launch broadcast is sent, after which the list will be archived and no further emails sent.
Security
Because no app data transits a network, there is no server-side attack surface for Driftwink's core functionality. Story and child-profile data reside in the app's private sandboxed container, protected by iOS's standard data-protection mechanisms. Family Voice recordings, if you make any, live in that same private container on your device and are never transmitted, so there is no voice data on any server to secure.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy if the app's data practices change, for example if a future version adds cloud features. Any material change (such as enabling cloud voice processing) will require updating this policy before the updated app is submitted to the App Store, and the App Store Connect privacy nutrition label will be updated to match. We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page when changes are made.
We will never introduce data collection practices that conflict with the plain-language commitments in this policy without giving advance notice and seeking fresh consent where required by law.
